You can change the skills your heroes use, I gave Koss my warrior combo in Factions.

I gave Koss the typical wammo set-up, including mending which he alway's cast's on my Paragon as we leave a city/Outpost.

I gave Koss rebirth, as soon as someone dies, he uses it.

For me I have Koss with a swordsmansip/Tactics build I concocted myself, my monk hero is a boon/prot and I'm still trying to decide on a build for my Dervish hero.

I find giving Koss "Watch yourself" and "Shields up" is decent since he spam them whenever possible.
Just don't give him frenzy, he has a habit of using it in conjunction with healing signet.

Anyways, I got my first monk hero as a WoH healer and the second as a life sheath prot.

I didn't have any problems with the monk hench. Besides, once you have the heroes with you, you can set them up how you want and forego using certain henchies that don't work so well.
